Birdwatch is looking for your observations

By Deirdre Burns

BirdWatch Ireland are looking for your help in recording riverbird species (Dipper, Sand Martin, Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail) nesting in built structures along our countries waterways.

For a second season we running the project to collect these observations.

This behaviour is commonly observed in Dippers, Grey Wagtails and Sand Martins and Kingfisher on rare occasion. Instances of Sand Martins in quay walls, Dippers under bridges and Grey Wagtails in lock gates etc are just a few examples of the types of records we are after.

This information will help grow our knowledge of this behaviour and determine how widespread this behaviour really is. Manmade structures by their nature are vulnerable to change through restoration and development. Waterways are home to many manmade structures from bridges to quay walls which require constant maintenance. Armed with this information it will help us develop policy, conservation measures and best practice guidelines for these species and the those who manage and maintain these structures.

To find out more about the survey see the project page here: http://www.birdwatchireland.ie/OurWork/ResearchSurveys/Waterwaysbirds/RiverBirdSurvey2017/tabid/1260/Default.aspx

To enter any records you have directly to the online system try here: http://records.biodiversityireland.ie/record/river-birds.

If in the situation you or branch members have bulk records for example of Dipper nest locations you can contact me directly at: rwhelan@birdwatchireland.ie and we can arrange how best to share these.

Thanks to The National Biodiversity Data Centre for kindly providing the online facility again in 2018. Thanks to all who submitted records in 2017, the 2017 report can be see here.

 Thanks and Kind Regards
