The PURE Mile is an annual initiative that encourages communities across  Wicklow to look after and showcase the heritage of their local area. Often described as the rural version of 'Tidy Towns' , the competition rewards local efforts to compile information about  the  heritage and folklore on their doorsteps and to take steps to improve their local environment. The PURE Mile is now seeking applications for 2015, click on the pdf below to download the application form.

What is The PURE Mile Competition?

The PURE Mile is an environmental initiative of The PURE (Protecting Uplands and Rural Environments) Project which aims to foster a greater appreciation and awareness of our country roadscapes by rewarding and acknowledging local community efforts.  The competition encourages communities and groups living in rural areas to nominate a mile stretch of road (approx. 1.6 km), and keep this area litter/rubbish free, research information about their local wild flowers, plants, trees, animals, built heritage, history, and the folklore associated with their areas. A large number of communities go the extra mile by repairing and painting old traditional gates, rebuilding stone walls, improving stiles, maintaining bridges, cleaning up farmlands and entrances, erecting bat and bird boxes, and holding information nights and talks about their local areas.
