Calligraphy, Traditional Music, Historic Gardens & More

You may be interested in participating in the upcoming events planned at the Ashford Community & Heritage Centre to celebrate National Heritage Week. Please note that places are limited for the adult and children’s calligraphy workshop so please reserve your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. (If you have visited our centre then you will have seen a sample of  calligrapher, Oona Tully’s work in our foyer).  Our evening talk by Patricia Butler is the last in our lecture series and will involve a unique exploration of some local historic garden gems as featured in the author’s publication with Mary Davies entitled “Wicklow Through the Artists Eye”.   Download our Heritage Week @ Ashford Flyer below

‘SEAMUS HEANEY HEDGE SCHOOL OF GLANMORE’ EXHIBITION   Explore the work of the late poet and his close association with nearby Glanmore in Ashford through an exhibition featuring original manuscripts, photographs, articles and audio readings . Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am – 4. pm

SUN 23rd  August                CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Artist, Oona Tully will instruct participants in this  hands on workshop using the medium of calligraphic script inspired by Heaney's early Irish poetry translations.

12 – 1pm Children’s Workshop, for ages 8 years +/ 2- 3 pm Adults Workshop

WED 26th August              WICKLOW THROUGH THE ARTISTS EYE

 Art Historian, lecturer and author, Patricia Butler will give an illustrated talk on the landscape and historic demesnes in the Ashford area including Mount Usher, Kilmacurragh, Killruddery and Powerscourt. This is the final evening talk in our Summer school programme and promises to be a very special  event.  FREE 8.00pm

 

FRIDAY 28th August         TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLHOUSE

All are welcome to enjoy an evening of music and song featuring local artists to celebrate the new role of the former schoolhouse as the Ashford Community & Heritage Centre.  8.00pm €10 charge to support the running of the centre.

 

Sundays 23rd &  30th August         GUIDED WALKS IN THE DEVILS GLEN

Meet at the main carpark @ 2.30 in this Coillte owned woodland approx. 3 km from Ashford. Duration of walk approx. 2 hours, moderate level along forest tracks.

  The Seamus Heaney Hedge School of Glanmore is an initiative of the Ashford Community & Development Centre and is supported by funding from  The Heritage Council and Wicklow County Council as an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan
