Cruinniú na nÓg in Wicklow   -Sat 23rd June Celebrating Youthful Creativity

Wicklow is set to join a nationwide celebration of youthful creativity on Saturday 23rd June. Cruinniú na nÓg  celebrates and encourages children and young people’s participation in culture and creativity through performance, workshops, screenings art, music and more.  In Wicklow there are FREE  events happening at Bray Head, Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, the Courthouse, Tinahely, Russborough House and Arklow library.  All events are free, fun and activity based and have been organised by Wicklow County Council’s Culture team as part of the Creative Ireland programme.

The Big Dig @ Bray Head combines creativity and archaeology and runs from 11.00 am until 4.00 pm. At this hands-on and fun event, kids get to participate in a simulated archaeological excavation, digging for Viking treasures and artefacts, and learning more about the lifestyles of their Viking ancestors.  There will be hourly slots, so book in advance to secure yours at https://creative.ireland.ie/cruinniu/ . There will also be lots more activity on a ‘drop in’ basis to include  demonstrations of medieval coin striking and a Medieval Draw-String Pouch Workshop where children can learn about leather working and make their own draw-string pouch.

Wicklow’s Historic Gaol continues their 20 year celebrations by hosting a Family Happy Hour from 2.00 – 4.00 pm where families go free. Not for the faint hearted, Wicklow Gaol tells the story of its prisoners through an interactive tour led by experienced and passionate actor guides.

On a visit kids (and their parents) can experience holographic projections of cruel prison guards, lifelike mannequins of major historic figures and state of the art audio-visual systems recreate the sounds of the defiant cries of the 1798 rebels, the famine era, the War of Independence and the Civil War. There is a replica two deck transportation ship to explore via a holographic interaction with the ship’s captain as visitors climb aboard the torturous 200-day journey to Van Diemen’s land.

Scéalta and Shenanigans at The Courthouse, Tinahely  from 2.00 -4.30pm where children (and their adults) will be able to come together to make masks of their favourite Fairy Tale characters  outside on the lawn to be followed The storytelling and  a special performance of The Magic Bookshop by Monkeyshine Theatre.
